LeBron James has set a new record for jersey sales by a player switching teams, with his Philadelphia 76ers jersey outselling Shohei Ohtani's within the first 48 hours of its announcement. This milestone surpasses Ohtani's record, which was set in 2023 when he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Fanatics reported that more of James' 76ers merchandise was sold in the first 24 hours than when he announced his move to the Lakers in 2018. Within 72 hours of the jersey's release, six different colorways of his No. 23 jersey were listed as out of stock on Fanatics' website. The company has since added more inventory and currently lists the jerseys for preorder.
James' decision to join the 76ers was a surprise, with him choosing Philadelphia over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Miami Heat. The move generated significant excitement, with comedian Kevin Hart, a friend of James and a 76ers fan, expressing his enthusiasm.
WNBA star Caitlin Clark also reacted to the news during the WNBA All-Star weekend, noting her surprise at James' choice to play in Philadelphia.
James will now aim to lead the 76ers to their first NBA title since 1983. He previously won a championship with the Lakers in 2020.
