Lane Kiffin Met With Profane Chants From Ole Miss Fans During College GameDay Appearance

LSU coach Lane Kiffin was met with a chorus of profane chants from Ole Miss fans during a Saturday appearance on ESPN's College GameDay. Kiffin, who previously coached Ole Miss before defecting to LSU, appeared via satellite from the team's hotel in Oxford, where his image was projected onto a large screen.

As Kiffin spoke, chants of "asshole" began from the crowd of students and fans gathered for the broadcast. Kiffin, who left Ole Miss for LSU just before the team's College Football Playoff berth last season, acknowledged the chants indirectly by telling the ESPN panel, "I really appreciate you guys gaslighting them with this."

The fans' disapproval was also evident through signs held up during the broadcast. One sign, held by a young fan, read: "I'm 10 and I make better decisions than Lane." Another sign humorously suggested a past relationship: "Why is my ex here?"

Despite the audible jeers, Kiffin attempted to de-escalate the situation, telling the panel, "It’s not about me. Both teams have great players, great coaches, [I] have a lot of respect for their program."

This incident preceded a highly anticipated top-10 matchup between No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss, the first such meeting between the two teams since 1962. The tension surrounding the game has been fueled by Kiffin's departure from Ole Miss to take a $91 million contract with LSU just days before Ole Miss was set to compete in the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss ultimately moved on to coach Pete Golding and reached the CFP semifinals.

Off-field controversies have also added to the narrative, including Kiffin's past comments on recruiting Black players to Ole Miss, lawsuits concerning Ole Miss transfers and NIL deals, and LSU's prior defiance of rules regarding former professional players on its roster.

Further adding to the pre-game drama, LSU listed quarterback Sam Leavitt as "doubtful" to play earlier in the week, sparking accusations of gamesmanship from fans. Leavitt has since been upgraded and is expected to start.

Kiffin himself had anticipated potential animosity, noting the possibility of "hatred" in the stands. Security was significantly increased in Oxford in anticipation of the large crowd.

LSU leads the all-time series against Ole Miss 65-39-3, but Ole Miss has won three of the last five contests. The Tigers entered the game as 2 1/2-point favorites. The matchup featured two Heisman Trophy contenders for Ole Miss: quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy. The winner of the game would improve to 3-0 on the season and gain significant bragging rights.
