Lando Norris Apologizes to Franco Colapinto for Demanding Ban After Baku Crash

Lando Norris has apologized to fellow Formula One driver Franco Colapinto for his post-race comments demanding a ban for the Alpine rookie. The incident occurred at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after the safety car withdrawal when Colapinto made a move down the inside of the first corner, colliding with teammate Pierre Gasly, who then tagged Norris.

Norris, who was forced out of the race due to the crash, had initially expressed strong frustration, stating that a driver causing such an incident on a restart should face at least a one-race ban. He described the driving as "careless" and suggested that the driver "shouldn't be there."

The McLaren driver faced significant backlash on social media from Colapinto's supporters. However, Norris has since reevaluated his reaction, acknowledging that emotions were running high.

"After the race, I sent Franco a message apologizing for the comments I made that I simply should not have said," Norris stated on Instagram. "I know better and emotions were running high but that is not an excuse. It was wrong of me."

He added, "I’ve made mistakes of my own over the years, and I know this is very much a part of racing and fighting on the limit."

Norris confirmed that he and Colapinto have reached an understanding and remain on good terms, both looking forward to the upcoming race in Malaysia.

Norris's retirement in Baku has left him 116 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli with eight rounds remaining in the season.
