The Los Angeles Lakers have signed forward Sandro Mamukelashvili to a four-year contract worth $52 million, positioning him as a pivotal player in their offseason strategy. This deal makes Mamukelashvili the team's most significant gamble for the upcoming season, with his performance expected to determine the success of the Lakers' overall offseason acquisitions.
Mamukelashvili, 27, enters his sixth NBA season after being selected 54th overall in the 2021 draft. Throughout his initial four seasons, he averaged fewer than 16 minutes per game with the Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs. However, his final 18 games with the Spurs in the 2024-25 season showed a notable improvement, averaging 10.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 17.4 minutes.
Breakthrough Season with Toronto
Mamukelashvili seized a sixth-man role with the Toronto Raptors during the 2025-26 season, experiencing a career year. He recorded personal bests in scoring (11.2 points per game), rebounding (4.9), assists (1.9), field goal percentage (52.3%), and minutes played (21.9). This performance highlighted his offensive versatility and ability to connect plays, skills the Lakers' coaching staff has emphasized.
Coach JJ Redick stated in May, "We gotta be better [at] being able to dribble, pass and shoot." Mamukelashvili's skillset is seen as directly addressing this need, offering an advantage over previous Lakers forwards like Rui Hachimura and other free-agent options.
Mamukelashvili's size at 6-foot-9 and 240 pounds, combined with his offensive versatility, makes him an intriguing prospect. He can contribute as a shooter, passer, and a facilitator who can move the ball and play off primary and secondary ball handlers. His ability to play effectively in small-ball lineups as a credible center option also allows the Lakers to deploy forwards like Jarred Vanderbilt and Adou Thiero, who may not be shooting threats but can contribute defensively.
While Mamukelashvili has defensive limitations, particularly on the perimeter and in interior defense, his offensive impact is expected to provide a significant boost. He is anticipated to enhance the Lakers' transition offense and offer valuable playmaking when star Luka Doncic is off the floor.
The Lakers also secured other key players during the offseason, including big man Walker Kessler on a four-year, $130 million contract and versatile guard Quentin Grimes on a four-year, $60 million deal. Homegrown star Austin Reaves earned a four-year, $180 million extension. With Mamukelashvili's contract representing less than 8% of the team's cap space over the next three years, the Lakers view his potential upside as a worthwhile investment.
