Brisbane Lions midfielder Lachie Neale may be leaning towards a move to a Melbourne-based club for the 2027 AFL season, according to veteran sports journalist Caroline Wilson. Wilson believes that financial considerations arising from Neale's recent marriage split are a significant factor in this potential relocation.
Neale, a two-time premiership winner, is currently under contract with the Brisbane Lions until the end of the current season. His future has been a subject of considerable discussion, particularly following his estranged wife Jules' move back to Perth with their two children. Initial speculation had pointed towards a return to Western Australia, with the West Coast Eagles or Fremantle Dockers being considered likely destinations to keep him closer to his children.
However, recent reports have linked Neale with Victorian clubs, specifically the Collingwood Magpies and St Kilda Saints. Wilson stated on the 'Real Footy' podcast that "Money makes the world go around, Sam, and Lachie Neale probably needs a bit more money now than he thought he would a few years ago." She added that Neale might be "thinking, maybe it would be nice to finish my career in Melbourne."
Neale has reportedly had an informal meeting with St Kilda coach Ross Lyon, a move seen as a positive sign for the Saints. St Kilda general manager Lenny Hayes confirmed the meeting, stating, "Obviously Ross has got a great relationship with Lachie [from their time together at Fremantle] and has for a number of years and catches up with him quite regularly and it was nice to get the invite. It went well."
Collingwood is considered a leading contender if Neale decides to return to Victoria. Both Richmond and Essendon have also shown interest, though they are understood to be behind Collingwood and St Kilda in the race for his signature among Melbourne clubs. Beyond the Victorian clubs, Adelaide and Neale's former team, Fremantle, are also viewed as strong possibilities.
With his contract expiring, the 33-year-old Neale could attract interest from as many as six clubs, including his current club, the Brisbane Lions, who are reportedly not yet conceding defeat in their efforts to retain him.
