Labuschagne's Form Hits Record Low as Australia's New Guard Shines
Marnus Labuschagne's extended run without a Test century reached a new benchmark, but promising performances from younger players bolstered Australia's position in the series decider.
Marnus Labuschagne's batting form has reached a record low for an Australian top-order player, enduring his 48th consecutive Test innings without scoring a century. The milestone arrived on day two of the decisive third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, where Australia's number three faced just five deliveries and failed to score before being dismissed.
Labuschagne's slump contrasts sharply with his earlier career, during which he averaged 65 in Test cricket from his insertion in the 2019 Ashes until the end of England's subsequent tour. Since his last century at Old Trafford in 2023, his average has dropped to 24.77. Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie commented that Labuschagne's record "will never be broken" and suggested Australia needed to look elsewhere, citing the "very big sample size" of his struggles. Ricky Ponting had previously noted an inability to score off the back foot, a criticism echoed by his dismissal when playing back to a full ball from spinner Simon Harmer.
Steve Smith was ruled out of the match with a neck injury, leaving Australia in a precarious position at 58-2, replying to South Africa's first innings total of 329. However, in Smith's absence, a trio of younger players stepped up to guide Australia to 330-4, establishing a one-run lead by the close of play.
Matt Renshaw, who has been in and out of the side, scored 74, adding to his career-best 190 in Durban earlier in the series. Cameron Green, often considered Australia's "golden boy," contributed 65, playing with a composure he has sometimes lacked in previous appearances. The most notable performance came from Josh Inglis, who finished the day unbeaten on 85. Inglis, who had limited preparation due to a broken finger and had not faced red-ball cricket since March, formed an unbroken 145-run partnership with Alex Carey.
The performances of Renshaw, Green, and Inglis suggest a potential shift in Australia's batting order and a glimpse into the team's future. Smith is expected to return, which will likely necessitate adjustments to the batting lineup. Smith has historically avoided batting at number three, and previous trials of Green in that position were unsuccessful. Inglis also has limited experience batting in the top order.
Despite the positive contributions from the emerging players, Labuschagne's position in the team appears increasingly uncertain, with selectors potentially needing to make difficult decisions for upcoming series.
