Kyle Larson Wins Talladega in Overtime After Massive Wreck Involving Joey Logano
Joey Logano flipped his car and Riley Herbst hit the wall in a late-race incident that brought out a caution and sent the race into overtime.
Kyle Larson secured a victory at Talladega Superspeedway in the Yellawood 500, winning in overtime by a margin of 0.041 seconds over William Byron and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The race concluded under caution after a significant wreck on lap 183 involving Joey Logano and Riley Herbst.
With six laps remaining in regulation, Logano, who was running sixth in the points standings, became loose on the front straightaway. His car spun and made contact with the wall before flipping onto its roof and sliding across the finish line. In the ensuing chaos, Herbst's car appeared to lose braking capability, leading him to collide with the outside retaining wall and then the inside barrier beyond the apron.
Logano and Herbst were taken to the infield care center for evaluation and were subsequently released. Logano's incident occurred while he was sixth in the championship standings, while Herbst was not in contention for the title.
Following the red flag and cleanup, the race resumed with Kyle Larson in the lead. Larson held off a late charge to claim the win. He entered the race leading Christopher Bell by five points in the championship standings, though Bell had crashed earlier in the event.
Larson's victory tightens the championship picture with two races remaining on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.
