Konsa Steps Up for Arsenal Amidst Saliba's Absence
Ezri Konsa has impressed since joining Arsenal, forming a strong defensive partnership and contributing offensively while William Saliba recovers from injury.
Ezri Konsa has seamlessly integrated into the Arsenal defense, drawing praise from manager Mikel Arteta for his rapid adjustment to the club and his consistent performances. Since his arrival on the opening day of the season, Konsa has started six matches and appeared in another, stepping into a vital role in the absence of William Saliba.
Arteta described Konsa's settling-in period as "unbelievable," highlighting his ability to establish chemistry with Gabriel Magalhães. "To position yourself in that manner, with that naturality I would say, and performing at the level that he's doing and building already a chemistry and a balance with Gabi that seems so solid, it's very difficult to do and we are really lucky to have him," Arteta stated.
Konsa's statistical output supports these assessments. Last season, he led the Premier League in pass completion rate and has continued that trend this season with a 96% success rate from 324 passes. He also ranked highly in successful ground duels in the previous campaign and remains a strong performer in this area.
Arsenal's defense has shown remarkable solidity, keeping a clean sheet in five of their eight Premier League matches this season, a joint-best record in the league. The partnership between Konsa and Gabriel has been particularly effective, with both players scoring in Arsenal's recent victory over Everton. This marked the first time two Arsenal center-backs scored in a Premier League match since February 2024. The duo has also started all three of Arsenal's Champions League fixtures, contributing to an unbeaten run in the competition.
Konsa himself has expressed ease playing alongside Gabriel, stating, "Gabriel made my life easy since I've joined the club and it's been a pleasure playing alongside him." Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown noted on Match of the Day that Konsa has not been overshadowed by his accomplished defensive partners, including Saliba, who was previously recognized on the Ballon d'Or list for best defenders.
While William Saliba continues his recovery with individual training on grass, there is no definitive return date. Arteta acknowledged the team's desire to have Saliba back, emphasizing his importance to the squad. "William is not fit and we are desperate to have him back because we know what he offers," he said.
The prospect of Saliba's return presents a potential challenge for Konsa's starting position, but his versatility, including the ability to play right-back, provides him with other avenues to remain in the starting lineup. The team's current form and defensive strength are seen as a testament to the overall quality and depth within the squad.
