Mets interim manager Andy Green has observed significant growth in pitcher Kodai Senga's performance as the team's closer. Senga demonstrated his adaptability on Tuesday, concluding a game against the Marlins by throwing 10 consecutive forkballs, resulting in two strikeouts and securing his seventh save in as many opportunities this season.

Green noted Senga's ability to adjust mid-inning. "Once he recognized there was some danger there, flipping the forkball and winning with that for 10 straight pitches, that is just good game awareness, and I think that is a great thing to see," Green stated. Senga allowed one run on two hits before implementing this strategic change.

Since transitioning to the bullpen on August 1, Senga has posted a 2.03 ERA over 14 relief appearances. He assumed the closer position after Devin Williams was placed on the injured list on August 10 with a right shoulder strain.

Despite his success in relief, Senga has communicated his preference to remain a starting pitcher. "He’s mentioned very directly that he wants to start, and we appreciate that directness and love the fact he advocates for what he is passionate about," Green said. "We love even more the sacrifice he shows for the team to slide into a role we could really use him in and to really excel at it."

In other team news, Jared Young was given the start at designated hitter instead of first base on Wednesday due to discomfort running the bases the previous night. Young went 2-for-5 with three runs scored. The team hopes the upcoming day off will benefit Young, who fouled a ball off his foot last weekend.

Brett Baty started at first base but exited the game in the second inning with left knee pain after running to first on an RBI single. The Mets are one of two MLB teams, along with the Yankees, with 10 players who have hit double-digit home runs this season. Players with at least 10 homers include Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, Bo Bichette, Francisco Alvarez, Carson Benge, Luis Robert Jr., Marcus Semien, Tyrone Taylor, Mark Vientos, and Baty.
