The New York Knicks made their first selection of the 2026 NBA Draft on the second day, choosing German guard Jack Kayil with the 39th overall pick. This move comes after the team traded their No. 31 pick to the Houston Rockets at the opening of the second round.

Kayil, 20, spent the past season playing for Alba Berlin in the Basketball Bundesliga. The Knicks' decision to trade their first-round pick was influenced by a directive from owner James Dolan to avoid exceeding the second apron of the NBA's salary cap.

In addition to acquiring the No. 39 pick, the trade with Houston also involved the Knicks sending the No. 55 pick to the Rockets. In return, New York received the No. 53 pick and a 2029 second-round selection. This maneuver allows the Knicks to make a draft selection while potentially mitigating future salary cap challenges.
