Knicks Open Title Defense Against Revamped 76ers
The reigning NBA champions host Philadelphia on opening night in a highly anticipated Eastern Conference matchup.
The New York Knicks will begin their quest to defend their NBA championship on Tuesday night, hosting the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden to tip off the 2026-27 season. The reigning champions, who ended a 53-year drought with a playoff run that included a 13-game winning streak, return with much of their core intact, led by Finals MVP Jalen Brunson.
Oddsmakers have installed the Knicks as 4.5-point favorites with an over/under of 231.5 points for the opening night contest. Both teams are considered strong contenders in a reconfigured Eastern Conference.
The Knicks' roster features a familiar core of Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby. Brunson was the centerpiece of their championship run, scoring a franchise-record 45 points in the decisive Game 6 victory against the Spurs. The team remains largely the same, with the notable departure of Mitchell Robinson.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, has undergone significant offseason changes. The 76ers acquired Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade and signed LeBron James in free agency. These additions complement their existing stars, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, forming a formidable lineup under new coach Nick Nurse.
Despite the star power, James has a history of opening nights not going as planned. His openers with new teams have resulted in losses against the Boston Celtics (with the Miami Heat), the Knicks (with the Cleveland Cavaliers), and the Portland Trail Blazers (with the Los Angeles Lakers). Last season, the Knicks demonstrated strong home-court advantage, boasting a 30-10 record at Madison Square Garden.
Given the Knicks' established chemistry and home-court advantage against a 76ers team integrating several new key players, analysts anticipate New York's returning players to outperform Philadelphia's less-defined rotation. Brunson's history of strong performances against the 76ers also makes his scoring potential a notable betting consideration.
