Klopp's Germany Loses Home Debut to Greece in Nations League

Jurgen Klopp suffered defeat in his first home match as Germany manager as Greece secured a surprise 1-0 victory in their Nations League fixture. Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the decisive goal 16 minutes from time in Augsburg, marking Greece's first-ever win against Germany.

This loss follows a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands on Thursday, Klopp's first game back in management since leaving his role as global director of football at the Red Bull group. Klopp took responsibility for the team's performance, stating that the line-up and changes were entirely his decision.

"The result isn't great, but it's part of the process, absolutely," Klopp told ARD. "It was clear that we weren’t going to completely tear apart a deep-sitting opponent. I could have easily lived with not winning the game by a big margin, but you can’t lose it."

He acknowledged the goal was unlucky but noted Greece's long-ball tactics. "We've only been together for a week, we're a newly formed team, so we need routines. Football needs training. Everything was great this week, except for large parts of this game."

Klopp urged patience and defended his players from criticism. "There's no reason for me to fall into depression and say: 'we're so bad'. We're not. But we're also not that good. I don't want the players to be judged conclusively... If you want to criticise someone, do it with me. Let the new ones develop."

However, former Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger was critical of the team's performance, stating, "We're no longer a top team. We're now just an average team. We no longer have players who make the difference."

Klopp had previously referred to the Greek side as their "golden generation." Germany is currently third in their Nations League group with one point. Greece leads the group with six points, followed by the Netherlands with four. Germany's next Nations League matches are against Serbia on October 1, followed by a rematch with Greece three days later.
