Kevin Owens made a triumphant return to the ring at WWE SummerSlam Night 2, securing a victory in a No. 1 contender's match for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The win marks Owens' first appearance in nearly 16 months, having been sidelined by a serious neck injury.

The addition of Owens to the match was a surprise executive decision by Nick Aldis, SmackDown's general manager. Aldis, who had been reinstated following his own match on Night 1, initially added "The Ring General" Gunther to the contest, which was originally set to be between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor. Aldis then announced Owens as the final participant.

Upon his entrance, Owens immediately targeted Balor and Gunther, while Zayn stood in the ring, appearing shocked by the development. Owens and Zayn, who have a history as tag team partners, shared a moment before exchanging blows. Owens demonstrated his readiness by executing running sentons and a swanton bomb onto the three other competitors.

Gunther attempted to force submissions from his opponents, but the match ultimately came down to Zayn and Owens. After Zayn hit a Blue Thunder Bomb but failed to secure a pin, Owens responded with a superkick and his signature stunner to win the match. Zayn had cautioned in a June interview with Fox News Digital that Owens' recovery was a process that simply required time.

Owens' victory positions him for another potential run at a world championship, with his path now leading to a match against CM Punk. The event took place at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
