Kevin Durant and Suns Owner Clash on Social Media Over Culture Remarks
NBA star Kevin Durant engaged in a public dispute with Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia on social media platform X.
NBA legend Kevin Durant has publicly disputed remarks made by Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia regarding the team's culture and player acquisitions. The exchange unfolded on social media platform X, drawing significant attention from fans and media.
During a recent interview with CNBC Sports, Ishbia stated that he "threw money at the problem" when acquiring star players like Durant in 2023. He suggested that the team lacked a clear "culture and north star," which prevented talented players from leading to championships.
Durant responded via X, refuting Ishbia's implication that his individual performance or the team's shortcomings were solely his responsibility. "#blameKD even though KD stayed on top of his game at 36 and got u back this 'culture' you love so much," Durant posted. He added, "Aye, Matthew acts like I got arrested for a DUI or sumn [sic]."
Ishbia replied to Durant's post, suggesting the NBA star had not watched the full clip. "Didn’t blame you @Kdtrey5, but am happy with the culture we are building here in Phoenix. We got the right guys and right focus now and are excited for this season," Ishbia wrote. He concluded by wishing Durant luck in Houston, where Durant is reportedly set to play next season.
Durant fired back again, referencing the Suns' ongoing financial commitment to former player Bradley Beal. "U should be giving Thanks every chance u get. You don’t have to pay me an absurd amount of money to play for another team," Durant commented. This appeared to allude to the fact that the Suns are still paying Beal approximately $19.4 million annually through 2030, following a waive-and-stretch provision on his contract after he joined the Los Angeles Clippers in July 2025.
