Katy Marchant Retires from Cycling After Decorated Career

Olympic gold medallist Katy Marchant has announced her retirement from cycling, concluding a career that included a historic Olympic gold medal in the women's team sprint at the 2024 Paris Games.

Marchant, 33, also secured World and European titles in 2024, adding to an individual sprint bronze medal from her Olympic debut in Rio in 2016. Her final competition was a silver medal in the team sprint at this summer's Commonwealth Games.

"I've achieved more than I could ever have dreamed of achieving," Marchant stated. "It feels really strange. It's not been a difficult decision."

While she contemplated continuing to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Marchant acknowledged the significant commitment required. "I just don't want to make those choices anymore to keep doing what it takes to get to LA," she said.

Marchant's journey into cycling began at age 20 in 2013 when she joined British Cycling's Olympic academy program. Previously a heptathlete, she had only cycled for leisure before a coach recognized her potential on an exercise bike.

In 2024, Marchant made history as the first track cyclist to return to elite competition after becoming a mother. She won Olympic, World, and European titles two years after the birth of her first child, overcoming a subsequent crash that required arm surgeries and a 12-month layoff.

She returned to the track again in January of this year, six months after the birth of her second child. Her most recent achievement was the Commonwealth silver medal in July.

Looking ahead, Marchant expressed a desire for "a little bit of freedom" and is exploring various possibilities, including her involvement as a farmer's wife and the potential growth of a small cake business. She also noted her enduring passion for high-performance sports.

"I've been enjoying not having to focus on the X amount of protein you're eating every day," Marchant shared. "I'm feeling a little bit freer. I've been able to do the school drop-offs, been able to do the swimming lessons, things like that, things that I haven't massively been able to do so much. I'm really enjoying just being me."
