Katie Boulter Reclaims British Number One Ranking After Japan Open Quarter-Final Win
Boulter battled back from a set down to defeat Antonia Ruzic and advance to the semi-finals of the Japan Open.
Katie Boulter has reclaimed the British number one ranking in tennis following her comeback victory over Antonia Ruzic in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open. The 27-year-old secured her semi-final spot by winning in three sets, demonstrating resilience after a challenging start to the match.
Boulter faced early difficulties, particularly on serve in the opening two sets, winning only 60% of points behind her first serve and committing four double faults. She also had to contend with seven break points against her. However, she adapted her strategy, finding success by stepping inside the baseline to put pressure on the 23-year-old Ruzic.
After being broken in her opening service game, Boulter was presented with an opportunity to get back into the first set at 4-2 when Ruzic double-faulted. Ruzic responded immediately, winning the next four games to take the set.
The second set saw Boulter regain momentum in a more competitive phase of the match. She successfully saved two break points in the third game, preventing a double-break deficit, and secured a crucial hold in the seventh game after both players had exchanged three consecutive breaks. This hold marked the beginning of a run of eight straight games for Boulter, who then established a commanding 4-0 lead in the deciding set.
Although Boulter was unable to serve out the match at 5-2, she broke her opponent to love in the subsequent game to clinch the victory and advance to the semi-finals.
