FOX Sports analyst Kasper Schmeichel believes that Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo will find it very difficult to come to terms with the end of his storied playing career. Schmeichel, a former goalkeeper for Denmark, drew parallels to his own experiences playing for his country.
"I know exactly what he's feeling right now," Schmeichel said. "It means everything to play for your country. Look at his body language. It hits you, and it hits you harder than you're ever going to expect."
Ronaldo's most recent tournament, the 2026 World Cup, saw Portugal eliminated in the round of 16 by Spain. Following the defeat, Ronaldo stated that it was his "last" World Cup, though he indicated he is still considering his future in the sport.
This marked Ronaldo's sixth World Cup appearance, a tournament Portugal has never won during his participation. He scored three goals across five matches in the 2026 tournament, including two against Uzbekistan. Across his World Cup career, Ronaldo has scored 11 goals and holds the all-time record for career goals with 976 in 1,326 games.
Schmeichel emphasized the emotional toll of realizing a World Cup career is over. "I think, at the moment, Cristiano is realizing that he's not going to play in the World Cup again. Those stadiums, you're not going to be able to play in them again. That's a really, really tough thing, and that's something I haven't come to terms with yet," he explained. "It's an ongoing process. But I think he's the type of guy that he'll want to keep going. He'll want to keep playing, and he doesn't need to, but he does it because he loves it. He loves the game. He's physically still able to play."
Schmeichel concluded that the four-year gap until the next World Cup makes it highly probable that Ronaldo will not participate again, a reality he anticipates will be challenging for the player.
Ronaldo has played for Al-Nassr FC in the Saudi Pro League for the past four seasons, averaging 29.3 goals per game and helping the club secure a league title in the 2025-26 season. His extensive career also includes stints with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Sporting CP.
