Julian Ward Appointed Liverpool Sporting Director
Ward returns to the role he previously held, succeeding Richard Hughes who departed for a Saudi club.
Liverpool has named Julian Ward as their new sporting director, replacing Richard Hughes, who has moved to Saudi club Al-Hilal. Ward previously served as sporting director during the 2022-23 season and most recently held the position of technical director for Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
Hughes's departure marks the latest in a series of high-profile executive exits from the club, following Michael Edwards' earlier departure as CEO of football for Liverpool's owner, FSG. Hughes's final act in his role was overseeing Liverpool's summer transfer window spending of approximately £240 million. His contract was originally set to conclude in 2027.
During his tenure, Hughes was involved in the acquisitions of players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. He joined Liverpool just over two years ago, after Jurgen Klopp's departure.

In Ward's previous tenure as sporting director, he was instrumental in signing players like Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Alexis Mac Allister.
FSG president Mike Gordon expressed confidence in Ward's return, stating, "The knowledge and expertise he brings will only enhance our football operations, while also ensuring Andoni (Iraola) is provided with the support he requires as he continues to make such a positive impression as head coach."
Ward himself commented on the appointment, "This is an exciting period for Liverpool - on and off the pitch - in which change and opportunity go hand in hand, but at the same time the culture, values and principles that have underpinned the club for so long remain as strong as ever."
Ward's initial involvement with Liverpool began in 2012, contributing to scouting, recruitment, and player development strategy. He was promoted to assistant sporting director in 2020 and took over as sporting director in 2022, departing at the end of that season. In 2024, he transitioned to FSG's technical director when Michael Edwards was appointed chief executive of football. He now steps back into the sporting director role vacated by Hughes.
