Julián Quiñones has been named to the 2026 Ballon d'Or shortlist, becoming only the second Mexican player in history to be nominated for the prestigious award. The announcement marks a significant achievement for the 29-year-old forward, who plays for both the Mexico national team and Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah.
Quiñones' nomination follows a standout season where he not only set individual scoring records but also delivered a memorable performance in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico. He concluded the 2025 Saudi Pro League season with 33 goals in 31 appearances, securing the league's Golden Boot and outscoring notable players like Ivan Toney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
During the World Cup, Quiñones made history by scoring Mexico's opening goal against South Africa, becoming the first player from a CONCACAF nation to net the opening goal of a World Cup tournament. He went on to score three more goals and provide an assist as Mexico reached the round of 16. His four goals in the tournament tie the national record, previously set by Luis Hernandez and Javier Hernandez.
Quiñones switched his international allegiance from his native Colombia to Mexico in 2023. Prior to his move to Saudi Arabia, he spent nearly a decade in Mexico's Liga MX, playing for clubs including Tigres UANL, Venados, Lobos BUAP, Atlas, and Club América. During his time in Liga MX, he appeared in 258 matches, scored 94 goals, and won nine league titles, including back-to-back championships with Atlas in 2021 and 2022, ending a 70-year title drought for the club.
Previously, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was the first Mexican player to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or, receiving a nod in 2007. The winner of the 2026 Ballon d'Or will be announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the London Palladium in England, marking the first time the ceremony will be held in that city.
