Jota's Return Boosts Celtic After Turbulent Period
Winger's comeback from long-term injury coincides with crucial league win and return to top of Scottish Premiership.
Celtic secured a vital 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park, marking a return to winning ways and reclaiming the top spot in the Scottish Premiership following a challenging period for the club. The win, punctuated by goals from Camilo Duran and Benjamin Nygren, was further brightened by the long-awaited return of influential winger Jota from an 18-month injury layoff.
Jota, who came on as a 74th-minute substitute, nearly marked his return with an assist and expressed immense relief and joy at being back on the pitch. "I was waiting on this for a long time," he told Sky Sports. "Just happy to be back. I've been working hard, the guys have been helping me as well. It was just the normal nerves, but after I stepped on the pitch everything goes well." He described the emotional impact of his absence, saying, "Imagine if someone takes away your child and I've got my child back today - that's how I've been feeling the last year. I found my child again today and I just want to keep it as long as I can." The 27-year-old affirmed his readiness to contribute, stating, "I'm feeling very good and I'm ready to play more and more and help the team. I know what I can do."
The positive atmosphere at full-time stood in stark contrast to recent weeks, which have been marred by disappointing results and off-field issues. The club had suffered three consecutive defeats before the international break, including two losses to rivals Rangers. Adding to the tension, Celtic's largest shareholder, Dermot Desmond, faced protests during a golf tournament. Manager Martin O'Neill had also publicly questioned his own commitment amid the pressure before reaffirming his decision to stay.
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller commented on the pressure O'Neill has faced, noting, "I could only imagine the pressure on Martin O'Neill - I know what it's like in Glasgow if you are beaten by Rangers twice." He added that the recent results and Jota's return seem to have revitalized the manager, stating, "But it seems like he's got his mojo back and is back to his old form and that's what results do. All round, when you look at his team, it must give him a lot of satisfaction."
O'Neill acknowledged the recent scrutiny, admitting, "Of course, there was a lot of noise and a lot of it we brought on ourselves as well too. So, nice to win. We have to take the criticism at the time. We lost three matches in a week - two to our big rivals. But we fought back today and let's see what Thursday brings."
