Josh Kerr broke the 27-year-old world mile record on Saturday at London Stadium, running a time of three minutes 42.68 seconds. The 28-year-old Briton achieved the feat in front of a capacity crowd of 60,000 spectators.

Kerr's performance surpassed Hicham El Guerrouj's previous record by 0.45 seconds. El Guerrouj, from Morocco, set the world record in 1999. Kerr had publicly stated his intention in March to break this record on home soil and adjusted his training regime accordingly, which reportedly included extended ice baths.

The 2023 world 1500m champion also improved his personal best by nearly three seconds with this performance. He earned a prize of £38,000 for setting the new world record. Kerr was a silver medalist in the 1500 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
