Jorge Messi, the father of global soccer icon Lionel Messi, died Friday night at a clinic in Rosario, Argentina, after a protracted illness, multiple Argentine and Spanish news outlets reported. He was 68.
His battle with illness had become a noted aspect of his son's participation in the World Cup, where Argentina reached the final. A specific cause of death was not immediately provided.
During an interview in June, Lionel Messi spoke about his emotional displays during tournaments, attributing them to family matters. "The truth is that for the family more than anything," he said. "Because, well, it’s always there, it’s always there. Now we are in a difficult moment. So many things came together, but obviously also because of them – a spectacular group that supports me – it makes me happy."
Shortly after that interview, the family issued a statement confirming Jorge Messi was ill and under medical observation, adding that his recovery was progressing positively at that time.
Jorge Messi was instrumental in shaping his son's early career and remained a close confidant throughout Lionel Messi's life. Lionel Messi currently plays for Inter Miami FC in Major League Soccer.
He is survived by his wife, Cecila; his sons, Lionel, Rodrigo, and Matias; his daughter, Maria Sol; and several grandchildren.
