England midfielder Jordan Henderson is sidelined after breaking his left wrist during his team's jubilant celebrations following their round-of-16 victory against Mexico. The incident occurred when Henderson tumbled over an advertising hoarding amid the celebrations in Mexico City.
Henderson required oxygen and was taken off the pitch on a stretcher. He underwent emergency surgery in Kansas City and was later pictured wearing a cast, observing his teammates' training session ahead of England's quarter-final match against Norway.
Despite his injury, Henderson, a veteran presence in the squad, continues to be a valued member. Assistant coach Anthony Barry spoke highly of Henderson's potential, telling talkSPORT that he sees "everything in Jordan" and calling him a potential future coach.
"He has it all, he's the full package, he's a serial winner as a player and an elite person off the pitch," Barry said. "And when it comes to football IQ, he can really hold court with anyone and the best of them."
England is training at Inter Miami's facilities in Florida as they prepare for their match against Norway. The team received a boost as players Declan Rice, Marc Guehi, and Reece James, who had injury concerns, all participated in training. Henderson's absence leaves central midfield options limited, with Rice, Elliot Anderson, and Kobbie Mainoo as the remaining options. Mainoo has yet to play in the tournament.
Jude Bellingham commented on Henderson's injury post-match, stating that the medical team is managing the situation and that the team was supportive. "Everyone was there to support him, and even that was a beautiful thing to see," Bellingham said.
