Jordan Henderson Trolled Liverpool Fans During Chelsea's Carabao Cup Match
The midfielder smirked and laughed at the hostile reception during his first return to Anfield as a Chelsea player.
Jordan Henderson, 36, returned to Anfield on Wednesday night as a Chelsea player, where he was met with a vociferous reception from Liverpool fans during a Carabao Cup last-16 tie. The midfielder, who made 492 appearances for Liverpool over a 12-year period before joining Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in the summer of 2023, played the full 90 minutes of the match.
Despite his extensive service to the club, Henderson was booed by the home supporters every time he touched the ball. The atmosphere intensified in the first half when Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo, leading to a penalty for Chelsea. As Henderson retrieved the ball to potentially take the spot kick, he was loudly jeered. In response, Henderson allowed himself a wry smile and a laugh, looking back at the crowd before ultimately handing the ball to Morgan Rogers, who converted the penalty.
The hostile reception may have been influenced by Henderson's engagement in several discussions with Liverpool players and the referee, Darren England, as well as his current allegiance to Chelsea. Early in the first half, Henderson and former teammate Virgil van Dijk were seen arguing a decision with England, and the pair later exchanged words from a distance as they walked away.
Following the match, which Chelsea ultimately lost 6-5 on penalties, Henderson appeared to applaud the crowd and was seen laughing and joking with Van Dijk. This contrasts with his previous return to Anfield at the end of last season with Brentford, where he received a warm reception and a standing ovation.
At that earlier match, Henderson expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking the Liverpool fans for their reception, which he stated meant a lot to him. He also noted the special occasion of witnessing his former teammates, Mo Salah and Andy Robertson, receive their deserved send-offs, adding that he would cherish the amazing times they spent together and wished them well.
