England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a broken wrist after slipping on an advertising board during celebrations following the Three Lions' 3-2 victory against Mexico in the Azteca Stadium. The injury will sideline the 36-year-old for the remainder of the World Cup tournament.
Henderson took to Instagram to comment on the incident, writing, "A night to remember that’s for sure. What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday." He had been part of the team's post-match ritual of singing "Wonderwall" before the accident occurred.
Teammate Dan Burn immediately signaled for medical assistance, and Henderson received attention from medics and oxygen before being taken to a hospital in Mexico City. He has since returned to the team's Kansas City base for surgery. Despite the injury, Henderson is expected to remain with the squad and attend their quarter-final match against Norway in Miami on Saturday.
Manager Thomas Tuchel will be without Henderson's leadership, leaving Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, and Kobbie Mainoo as the available midfielders. Mainoo has yet to feature in the tournament.
Captain Harry Kane stated after the match that Henderson had fallen and appeared to be okay, with issues related to his arm. Jude Bellingham added that Henderson was in "a bit of bother" but that the medical team was managing the situation. Kane scored the winning goal from a penalty, following a brace from Bellingham, while Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored for Mexico. England played with 10 men from the 54th minute after Jarell Quansah was substituted.
