Jordan Cox is set to be awarded an England central contract on October 1, with his reward for a strong international summer being a £200,000 salary. Cox has scored half-centuries in England's wins over Pakistan in the ongoing Test series, demonstrating his value to the squad.
Ben Stokes, 35, retired from international cricket in June but will remain on England's payroll until October, a recognition of his 15-year career. Stokes' current £1 million-a-year deal, which includes captaincy bonuses, was set to continue for another year, but he is now building a freelance career. He has secured a £210,000 contract with the Adelaide Strikers for the Big Bash League and will also earn from commercial ventures.
The savings generated from Stokes' departure will fund Cox's entry-level contract and facilitate the return of Ollie Robinson to the central contract roster. Robinson has not featured for England in two years.
Cox has shown versatility by filling various roles, including deputizing for Stokes at number seven during a Test against New Zealand and covering for Jacob Bethell at number three. His ability to adapt and perform in different batting positions is expected to be considered by incoming head coach Stephen Fleming and captain Joe Root as they prepare for the tour of South Africa in December and next summer's Ashes.
Jacob Bethell is currently sidelined with meniscus damage to his right knee, sustained during a one-day series against India. He is undergoing rehabilitation and is targeting a return to action in Australia in November, ahead of the Test series against South Africa.
Emilio Gay, an opener, is under pressure after scoring only 82 runs in five innings. While Cox could potentially bat in the top three if Gay is dropped, his ball-striking ability might be more valuable lower down the order, below Harry Brook. Dan Lawrence has been filling an all-rounder role at number six.
Cox's inclusion on the central contract list signifies his successful integration into the England setup, regardless of the specific batting position he eventually fills.
