Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has signed a two-year, $44 million contract extension, according to NFL Network. The deal, which includes $39 million guaranteed and is worth up to $47 million, marks the largest third contract ever awarded to a running back.
Taylor's new pact follows a recent three-year, $75 million extension signed by Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, and is expected to influence negotiations for other top players at the position, such as the Detroit Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs.
The recent influx of significant contracts for running backs suggests a shift in financial valuation for players at the position, which has seen considerable debate regarding their market value.
Taylor, 27, has established himself as a key player for the Colts over his six seasons. In the 2025 campaign, he led the league with 323 carries and 18 rushing touchdowns, accumulating 1,585 rushing yards. Over the past two seasons, Taylor has recorded 3,016 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns on 626 carries, in addition to 64 receptions for 514 yards.
Previously, Taylor signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Colts during the 2023 season, which included $26.5 million in guaranteed money. This new extension was reportedly finalized without the public drama that surrounded previous negotiations.
With an average annual value of $22 million, Taylor's contract ranks second among running backs, trailing only Robinson's $25 million average annual value. He also surpasses the $20.6 million earned by Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles.
