Jonathan Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, has explained the decision for the forward to sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves instead of accepting a potential extension with the Golden State Warriors. Turner stated that the move was strategically designed to position Kuminga for greater long-term financial security and control over his career.
Turner appeared on the FanDuel show “Run it Back” to discuss the choice, addressing the Timberwolves' two-year deal worth up to $12.4 million, which includes player options for the 2026-2027 NBA season. He indicated that the rumored three-year, $75 million extension with the Warriors was not the primary focus.
"With the [three-year, $75 million deal] it was to me, he had to get to a spot to make long-term money, or past this contract, where the basketball was set," Turner said. "With the basketball comes the money, right? If you understand this business, it’s ‘If it’s a good basketball fit, the money follows.’ The money coming before the basketball is not really how you’re going to continue to make more and more money."
Turner emphasized Kuminga's desire for control over his future, drawing a parallel to his mid-season trade from the Warriors to the Atlanta Hawks last season, a move he did not have agency in. The agent believes the next year's free-agency option with the Timberwolves provides Kuminga with leverage for a more significant contract in 2027.
"There’s a lot of teams with money, and if you’ve paid attention to JK’s recruiting saga over the last few years, those teams that have been trying to sign and trade for him, Sacramento, Chicago, these teams have a lot of money next year," Turner explained. "Who knows, but the game board is set very, very well for JK for 2027."
Reports indicated that the Los Angeles Lakers had also made a sign-and-trade offer that would have exceeded $12 million per year over three seasons. Draymond Green, a teammate of Kuminga's in Golden State, has cautioned Kuminga about his decision, suggesting that a reduced role could arise if the Timberwolves struggle early in the season. The agent acknowledged that Kuminga's performance will be critical in realizing the potential of his new contract.
