Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has adopted a more aggressive and intense demeanor during the team's 2026 training camp, according to wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. Chase described Burrow, who has been sidelined by injuries in recent seasons, as "f–king pissed" and "Mean Joe."
"I like it when he’s f–king pissed. I like the fire that he has," Chase told reporters. "He doesn’t always bring it out. He maybe did it once or twice since camp started, but I like it."
Chase added that Burrow's overall presence has changed. "His demeanor is more aggressive. His face is more aggressive, the way he talks is more aggressive. He’s got a little mean mug on his face a little bit. I kind of like when he’s like that."
Burrow, often referred to as Joe “Brrr,” has struggled with injuries, playing in 35 of a possible 51 games over the past three seasons, during which the Bengals have missed the postseason. This increased intensity comes as the team faces mounting pressure to succeed in the upcoming season.
After leading the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI in his second season, Burrow has experienced a dip in team success. His third season saw the team fall in the AFC Championship game. Since then, the Bengals have grappled with injuries and roster construction issues, culminating in a 6-11 record last season. Head coach Zac Taylor faces a critical year as the team aims to recapture the success of their Super Bowl run.
The Bengals made a significant defensive acquisition in the offseason, trading for Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. In return, the Giants used the No. 10 overall pick to select offensive lineman Sisi Mauigoa.
The Bengals are scheduled to begin their preseason on Thursday against the Detroit Lions. Their regular season opener is set for September 13 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
