Joe Buck and Troy Aikman Reunite in Broadcast Booth Amidst Reports of On-Air Tension
Longtime ESPN commentators returned to Monday Night Football after alleged argument, sparking fan speculation about their dynamic.
Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were back in the ESPN broadcast booth for Monday Night Football, a week after reports emerged of an alleged argument between the two veteran commentators. The duo, who have worked together since 2002, returned to call the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders.
Their reunion comes as uncertainty surrounds Aikman's future with ESPN. Both Buck and Aikman signed lucrative deals to join ESPN in the 2022 offseason after leaving Fox. While Buck has recently agreed to a significant contract extension with the network, Aikman's future beyond the current NFL season remains undecided.
Speculation about the commentators' relationship intensified as cameras showed them in the broadcast booth. Many NFL fans interpreted the interaction as tense, with social media users commenting on perceived awkwardness and "disdain" between Buck and Aikman.
Last month, it was confirmed that Buck would continue as the voice of Monday Night Football through the 2030s, having signed a new deal reportedly worth $15 million to $18 million annually. In contrast, Aikman, whose five-year, $90 million contract is set to expire after the Super Bowl in February, has indicated he may leave ESPN.
According to Front Office Sports, Buck addressed unspoken tension with Aikman before their broadcast the previous week. The report claims an argument followed, but it de-escalated before they called the game without visible signs of strain. Aikman himself acknowledged the situation in an interview with Dallas-Fort Worth's 96.7 The Ticket, stating, "There's probably a time and a place for all that. I don't know if now is the time. I don't know if it's hard to figure out kind of what happened." He added, "I'll broadcast through this season and I'll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I'm looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be."
