Famed jockey Frankie Dettori was seriously injured in a road traffic accident in Newmarket, England, on Wednesday night, his team announced. Dettori suffered several broken ribs and a broken thumb.

According to his team's social media post, another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Dettori was driving, causing it to spin and flip. He was taken to the hospital following the crash. His injuries are being assessed, and he remains in the hospital for further observation.

Dettori expressed gratitude to the emergency services and medical staff attending to him. His focus is now on rest and recovery, with no further comment expected until there is a significant update.

The Italian jockey has had a prolific career, accumulating more than 3,350 victories, primarily in England. He famously rode seven winners in seven races at Ascot in September 1996. Dettori had recently retired as a jockey after competing in Brazil and had participated in races in the United States and Britain for over three decades. He was scheduled to take part in the Leger Legends race at Doncaster in September, which would have marked his return to riding in Britain since 2023.
