JJ Spaun Claims BMW Championship Title, Edging Out Rory McIlroy
Los Angeles native JJ Spaun secured his first PGA Tour win at the BMW Championship, while Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for second. The tournament also saw a dramatic collapse from Spanish golfer Manuel Elvira.
JJ Spaun, an admitted anglophile and fan of Jeremy Clarkson, secured a significant victory at the BMW Championship, his first PGA Tour title. The Los Angeles-based golfer finished two strokes ahead of Rory McIlroy, who ended the tournament in a tie for second place.
For much of the final round, the focus was also on Spain's Manuel Elvira, who held a commanding lead. Ranked 296th in the world and without a professional win, Elvira stood at 17-under par on the 18th hole with a chance to win the flagship DP World Tour event. However, a series of errors on the final hole, including finding a bunker twice and taking seven strokes to complete, led to a dramatic collapse. Elvira's final score dropped him into a tie for second place, costing him an estimated £800,000 in prize money. He ultimately shared second place with McIlroy, Aaron Rai, and Adam Scott, earning approximately £500,000.
Spaun, 36, carded a closing round of 67, including birdies on four of his final five holes. He revealed that he had been motivated by being surprisingly left out of the American team for the Presidents Cup. "It means so much. I've kind of blossomed into this player I never thought I could be," Spaun said after his victory. He expressed a fondness for England, noting that he and his wife often vacation in the Cotswolds and he enjoys watching "Clarkson's Farm." His wife accompanied him during the final round, holding a Jeremy Clarkson mask.
Rory McIlroy, who finished with a 68 to reach 15-under par, expressed encouragement with his game despite missing opportunities. "I putted OK for the most part this week but I missed a lot of putts. I wish I had some of those putts back but I have to be encouraged with where my game is at," McIlroy stated. His second-place finish positions him closely behind Patrick Reed in the Race to Dubai standings. McIlroy aims to win the order of merit for an eighth time, which would tie Colin Montgomerie's record.
Elvira described himself as "devastated" following his performance on the 18th hole. His missteps included an initial decision to lay up short of a creek, which resulted in him missing the fairway and landing in a bunker. His subsequent recovery shot nearly struck journalists near the grandstand before he duffed his fourth shot into another bunker.
