JJ Redick Addresses Lakers Roster Speculation with Contrasting Remarks
New Lakers coach JJ Redick made pointed comments about team identity and the racial makeup of his potential starting lineup.
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick commented on his team's roster construction and identity during his annual press conference, making remarks that touched on the departure of LeBron James and addressed online speculation about the team's player demographics.
Redick suggested that the current roster, without James, has a clearer sense of defined roles and better-fitting pieces than previous iterations of the team. "I think we’ve always tried to give our players clearly defined roles, and I think with this group, [it’s] probably the first time in my three years here that I feel like the pieces actually fit together," Redick stated. "And so those roles probably get even more crystallized."
His comments come amid online discussions and the emergence of the nickname "Snowtime" for the Lakers' projected core, which includes players like Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler, perceived by some as lacking racial diversity. Addressing this, Redick made a quip about the projected starting lineup, stating, "I'm pretty confident in three of the spots. The other two spots will not be two white guys."
Redick, who previously co-hosted the podcast "Mind the Game" with LeBron James, is entering his third season as the Lakers' head coach. The team has experienced early playoff exits in his previous two seasons, first against the Minnesota Timberwolves and then a Western Conference Semifinals sweep by OKC.
James departed the Lakers in July 2026 to join the Philadelphia 76ers, shifting the dynamic for Redick as he takes on the primary coaching responsibilities.
