Rookie edge rusher David Bailey, the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, is already making a significant impression during New York Jets training camp, demonstrating an ability to disrupt plays against both the pass and the run.
Bailey was a standout during a recent practice, recording what would have been three sacks in a no-tackling scenario. While he had a less dominant practice a few days later, he still made notable plays, including a potential tackle for loss involving running back Breece Hall. Veteran defensive tackle Harrison Phillips noted Bailey's consistent presence in the backfield, stating, "I see him in the backfield all the time. Oh my gosh."
Despite the significant investment and the resulting high expectations from fans, teammates, and staff, Bailey expressed a calm approach. "I wouldn’t necessarily say I feel pressure. It’s in the back of your mind," Bailey said. "You know you’re the No. 2 pick. You know there are high expectations from the fans, and also from teammates and the staff and everything. I try to not let that get to me. I try to say nothing has changed honestly. If I want to be the best, I’ve got certain things I need to do."
Bailey has been engaged in daily battles with second-year right tackle Armand Membou, which have become a highlight of the training camp. Bailey described Membou as a "really good player" with exceptional strength and quickness, acknowledging that their matchups are pushing both players to improve. "He’s been getting me better, and I hope I’ve been getting him better," Bailey commented.
Bailey, 22, appears to have a mature outlook on his transition to the NFL. He believes he began preparing for the professional level during his time at Texas Tech by adopting a more professional approach to his game. "I feel like I took that step at Texas Tech to operate and to function like a pro," Bailey said. "I would say the transition really hasn’t been too difficult or too different, but I’m playing against the best in the world, so it’s a little bit different in that regard."
The next significant evaluation for Bailey will come when the team dons full pads, a change that is expected to elevate the intensity of practice. Bailey's early performance suggests he is on track to meet the expectations placed upon him as a high draft pick.
