The New York Jets endured an embarrassing moment during their season-opening victory against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, when kicker Jason Sanders produced what many are calling the "worst kick in NFL history." The errant attempt occurred in the second quarter with the Jets leading 10-3.
Facing fourth-and-8 at Nissan Stadium, Sanders' 30-yard field goal attempt sailed significantly wide of the goalposts. Replays confirmed that no Titans player had blocked the kick, attributing the miss solely to the kicker.
Footage of the play quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism from fans and analysts. One prominent social media account declared it "the worst kick in NFL history," while another commenter noted, "That kick missed so badly I felt personally invited to keep the clip on loop."
Despite the gaffe, the missed opportunity did not ultimately cost the Jets. The team went on to win the game 23-10, with Sanders later redeeming himself by converting two field goals from beyond 50 yards to help seal the victory.
The win spoiled the debut of Titans head coach Robert Saleh, who previously coached for the Jets. The Jets offense was led by running back Breece Hall, who amassed 102 rushing yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Geno Smith, who completed 19 of 24 passes for 215 yards.
The Jets will host the Green Bay Packers in their home opener next Sunday, while the Titans will look to rebound against the Philadelphia Eagles.
