Jeremiah Smith Surges to Heisman Favorite After Record-Breaking Performance

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has emerged as the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy following a historic performance in the Buckeyes' 42-19 win against the Illinois Fighting Illini.

During the game, Smith achieved a career milestone, tying the Ohio State single-game touchdown record with four touchdown receptions. He amassed 217 receiving yards, becoming only the second player in the university's history to record over 200 receiving yards and four touchdown catches in a single game. This performance has elevated Smith to the top of the Heisman Trophy rankings, surpassing Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and Miami quarterback Darian Mensah.

Smith's standout performance continues Ohio State's tradition of producing elite wide receivers. The Buckeyes have an active streak of five consecutive drafts with a first-round wide receiver selection, featuring notable talents such as Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Emeka Egbuka. Smith is widely expected to extend this streak.

Following their upset loss to Texas, the Buckeyes have since outscored opponents 101-22. Their next significant challenge will be against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, October 3.
