After a challenging end to Tuesday's practice, New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart rebounded on Wednesday, throwing three touchdown passes during a red zone period. This performance followed earlier struggles in the session, where he threw two interceptions against the second-team defense.
"The football response absolutely was there," head coach John Harbaugh said. "Yeah, he stepped up. A lot of third-down stuff we did. Fourth-down stuff, fourth down in the red zone to win the game, things like that. Yeah, he had a heck of a practice. It was impressive."
Harbaugh had specifically addressed Dart's behavior from the previous day, when the quarterback taunted cornerback Greg Newsome II after a touchdown run by flipping the ball at him. Harbaugh noted that Dart accepted responsibility for the incident.
"That’s an opportunity for coaching points," Harbaugh explained. "So, we went over the sequence, and everybody knows. He was great about it. He’s great about accepting responsibility, and he’s a very accountable guy. I feel like all the guys are."
Newsome expressed no lingering issues with Dart's actions, stating, "I’m a guy that chirps. I like stuff like that. So, we were laughing at lunch about it literally after practice. We were about to post a little selfie. It was funny. I like the aggression. I like that with my quarterback. So, it’s all good."
Newsome also acknowledged Dart's effectiveness as a runner, which poses a challenge for the defense during practice as he cannot be hit. "He’s proven, though. I mean, when he gets close to the end zone, he scores. I’m telling him he’s not going to score. So, there’s obviously going to be some back-and-forth all the time."
In roster news, the Giants placed defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris on season-ending injured reserve after initial hopes for a return this season faded due to a torn Achilles. Wide receiver Beaux Collins, who made the roster last season as an undrafted rookie, was waived/injured. Defensive backs D.J. James and David Long Jr. were signed to fill the roster spots.
Additionally, wide receiver Dalen Cambre, who saw limited action last season, is drawing attention with a series of highlight catches in camp. "I think he’s done a great job," Harbaugh said. "and he’s got our attention."
Former Lions head coach and Ravens offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was also present at practice, spending time with Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Mornhinweg was the Eagles offensive coordinator when Nagy began his coaching career on that staff in 2008.
