Javon Walton Balances Boxing Ambitions With Acting Career

Javon Walton, known for his roles in 'Euphoria,' 'Utopia,' and 'The Umbrella Academy,' is set to make his professional boxing debut on Saturday against UFC great Henry Cejudo. The fight, accepted on less than two weeks' notice after Cejudo's original opponent withdrew, has been sanctioned by the Florida State Commission and will count towards their professional records. Walton, who has a background in gymnastics and boxing, sees the ring as an outlet for emotional expression that differs from his acting work.

Walton's journey into acting began serendipitously when casting director Jennifer Venditti saw him showcase his boxing and gymnastics skills on Steve Harvey's television show at age 11. This appearance led to an audition for 'Euphoria,' initiating a burgeoning acting career that has seen him work alongside Sylvester Stallone in 'Samaritan.'

Balancing both demanding careers presents a significant challenge. Filming commitments can require Walton to be away for extended periods, while boxing preparation necessitates an intense eight-week training camp. "My goal is to see how well I can balance both but that's easier said than done," Walton stated. "I kind of have to pick one to focus on."

Despite the demanding schedule, Walton acknowledges the respect required for his opponent, Henry Cejudo, a former Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalist and two-division UFC champion. However, Walton emphasized that Cejudo is entering his domain. "On the mat it would be a different story, but this is the ring," Walton said.

Walton will be trained by his father, DJ, who first introduced him to boxing at age four. Reflecting on their journey, Walton described their relationship as a partnership, with his father also learning the coaching side as Walton developed as a fighter. "The way I look at it is we're the pilot and co-pilot," Walton shared. "He's a head coach who happens to be my dad. I want to do right by us and not just for me."
