Jason Cundy Revels in 'Wind-Up Merchant' Role Fueled by Tottenham's Struggles

Jason Cundy has embraced his role as football's premier 'wind-up merchant,' a persona that has significantly boosted the popularity of talkSPORT's Sports Bar show on social media. His primary target is his radio co-host, Jamie O'Hara, whom Cundy consistently mocks, particularly regarding the performance of Tottenham Hotspur.

Cundy derives 'huge pleasure' from antagonizing O'Hara. He frequently uses an Ange Postecoglou mask, complete with 'shameful stats' about Tottenham, to taunt his colleague. "Every single game, they lose or manage not to score. Never has the expression 'the gift that keeps giving' been more appropriate to Spurs at any other time," Cundy stated in an interview with Daily Mail Sport.

The Postecoglou mask has become a signature element of Cundy's act. He even wore it to O'Hara's wedding. Cundy explained that the idea for the mask stemmed from the visual nature of talkSPORT. "We bought them from South America and we order a new mask every year," he said. "We bought the Ange mask when he was the manager at Nottingham Forest, and by the time the mask turned up he'd got sacked, so I had to find a role for it." The show also has masks of Gary Neville, Arne Slot, and is set to introduce a Jamie Carragher mask.

Cundy claims the mask has a distinct, unpleasant odor, which he attributes to Tottenham's poor performance. "It absolutely stinks! It's got a weird smell about it. I tell Jamie it's the smell of failure. That's what it stinks of," he remarked. He believes that the worse the mask gets, the worse Spurs perform.

Tottenham's current struggles, including being winless and near the bottom of the Premier League, provide ample material for Cundy. He has labeled the club with 'Spursitis' and expressed skepticism about any imminent turnaround. "You can't finish 17th, 17th, and go into a new season expecting there to be a huge dramatic change," Cundy observed. He suggested that if Tottenham continues to falter, manager Roberto De Zerbi could face dismissal, a fate he believes is inevitable for any manager in their position. Cundy also criticized the club's player acquisitions, stating that their signings do not score goals and that the team fails to create chances.

Beyond his on-air persona, Cundy is also a survivor of testicular cancer and uses his platform to advocate for men's health. He spoke on behalf of TENA Men, who sponsored the 2026 Prostate United launch event, urging men to get checked for testicular cancer and PSA tests, emphasizing it as a duty to oneself and family. He previously shared his own cancer experience in a long-form interview with talkSPORT in 2022, revealing a more sensitive side.

Cundy appears unfazed by the potential consequences if Tottenham were to improve significantly, suggesting that O'Hara might then have an opportunity to mock Cundy's own favored club, Chelsea. However, Cundy remains confident that a rapid resurgence for Tottenham is unlikely.
