Jaroslav Chmelar Earns Role With Rangers Through Strong Play

Jaroslav Chmelar has secured a spot in the New York Rangers' lineup, demonstrating impactful play through his first four games and impressing head coach Mike Sullivan. The 23-year-old forward feels a significant difference in his performance compared to his 28 NHL games last season.

"The question is: Do we just put guys in the lineup and send guys down just because they’re waivers exempt, or do we put the guys in the lineup that we think are going to give us the best chance to win? We chose to make a decision based on the latter," Sullivan said. "We think the guys that are in the lineup are deserving to be in the lineup through their performance and their play. Jaro is one of those guys. The expectations that we have, and how we’ve defined it with Jaro, is his intentions are in the right place — and we think he’s had an impact on the game."

Teams often navigate the waiver wire to manage rosters at the beginning of the season, with decisions on player assignments sometimes influenced by whether a player is exempt from waivers. The Rangers opted to keep Chmelar, who was waiver-exempt, on the roster. While veteran Taylor Raddysh ultimately cleared waivers, the team prioritized Chmelar's potential contribution.
