Speculation surrounding the relationship between Wests Tigers star Jarome Luai and head coach Benji Marshall has intensified, fueled by a comment from Luai's father on social media. Martin Luai reportedly left an "ok" hand sign emoji on an Instagram post by Triple M, which featured a quote from journalist Danny Weidler suggesting the player and coach are no longer close.

Weidler was quoted in the post stating, "I don't think Jarome and Benji are as close as they were... ever since he said I'm off to PNG." This comment comes amid the ongoing situation where Luai, who is contracted with the Tigers through the 2027 season, has exercised an exit clause to join the PNG Chiefs when they enter the league in 2028. However, the Tigers and coach Benji Marshall have reportedly informed Luai that he must find a new club for the 2027 season, indicating a premature end to his tenure with the team.

Marshall has previously emphasized a demand for complete commitment from his players. In a statement before the season, he declared, "At the Wests Tigers we fg now stand for something and if you're not prepared to follow what we stand for, guess what, there's the fg door." This stance suggests that Luai's decision to leave, coupled with the reported fallout, may be seen as a defiance of the coach's expectations for full dedication to the team's vision.

Luai joined the Wests Tigers as a key figure in their rebuilding efforts. While the team improved from last place in the 2025 season to 13th in 2026, avoiding a fourth consecutive wooden spoon, his decision to leave after only two years into a new project has prompted questions. The initial five-year contract, worth $1.2 million per year, included an exit clause exercisable within the first two years, a provision that has now led to his departure. The inclusion of such a clause by the club itself may also be a point of contention in how the situation has unfolded.
