Jamie Vardy's eagerly anticipated debut for Burnley has been postponed due to a suspension carried over from his previous club, Cremonese. The 39-year-old striker joined the Clarets on Sunday following his departure from the Italian side at the end of last season.

Many expected Vardy to feature in Burnley's fixture against Wrexham on Tuesday, but he was notably absent from the team sheet. Daily Mail Sport has learned that Vardy's omission stems from accumulating five yellow cards during his time in Serie A.

Under Italian league rules, a one-match suspension is automatically triggered after a player receives five cautions. Vardy received his fifth yellow card in Cremonese's final match of the season against Como.

These regulations differ significantly from those in the English Championship. In the Championship, a suspension is only incurred after five yellow cards if they occur within the first 19 league games. The threshold increases to 10 yellow cards for a two-match ban up to the 37th league game, and 15 yellow cards result in a three-match suspension for the season.
