Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool player, has expressed his belief that Mo Salah is "too good" for a move to Trabzonspor and could have pursued opportunities at more prestigious clubs in Europe's top leagues. Carragher's comments come as Salah was greeted by an extraordinary reception from approximately 25,000 jubilant fans upon his arrival at Trabzon Airport.
Supporters created a festive atmosphere with flares and a red carpet to welcome Salah, who has signed a two-year deal with Trabzonspor. The player himself described the welcome as "UNBELIEVABLE!" and expressed his happiness with the incredible atmosphere.
Salah, who left Liverpool this summer a year into his contract extension, had reportedly been considering his next career move for some time. Carragher speculated that Salah might have been deterred by wage demands, suggesting he could have accepted a slightly lower salary to join a club like AC Milan or Juventus.
"I think he can be playing in Serie A. Turkey for me feels a level too low," Carragher stated on the Football Ramble podcast. "I was convinced he'd end up at an AC Milan or Juventus or somewhere like that, maybe his wages were a problem. Looking at him, I don't know him, obviously have never spoken to him. But he's like Ronaldo, he's so driven, his numbers mean so much to him."
The Egyptian international expressed his commitment to achieving success with Trabzonspor in both the league and European competitions, drawing parallels to his past achievements at other clubs. "I'll work very hard to achieve success in the league and in Europe. Because I've won successes at every club I've joined. I've always been a successful footballer. And that's what I'll do here too," Salah told the gathered fans.
Salah's departure from Liverpool had been a subject of significant interest, particularly after Al-Ittihad made a substantial bid in the summer of 2023. Trabzonspor confirmed their talks with Salah and informed followers of his travel arrangements, organizing a welcome event. Fans had gathered outside the airport in anticipation of his arrival.
Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish league last season. Salah will be the most high-profile signing in the club's history, joining players such as former Manchester City defender Stefan Savic. The club has won its domestic title seven times.
