James Anderson has voiced his astonishment and disappointment after being informed that his contract with Lancashire would not be renewed. The veteran bowler, England's record Test wicket-taker, described the decision, made by Lancashire's incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace and chief executive Richard Kenyon, as deeply unsettling.

"All of the way through the season myself and the head coach were like 'is it something we are doing? Could we be doing more to help the team?'" Anderson stated. "I finished the season thinking 'was it something I did? Was I doing something wrong?' - and then I get this news.

"Now I am thinking that even more. I am thinking 'this is happening again. Is there something fundamentally wrong with me as a person?' Your head just sort of races."

Anderson had aspired to conclude his career with Lancashire, the club he supported as a child. The decision mirrors his recent experience with the England national team, which moved on from him to rebuild their attack for future Ashes campaigns, leaving him unsure about his future playing career.

"I don't know if my career is done, we will have to wait and see, but it would be nice at some point if someone would let me retire," he said.

The departure has drawn criticism from some Lancashire members and former teammates. Stuart Broad, Anderson's ex-England bowling partner, reportedly called the handling of the situation "pretty disrespectful" and a failure of leadership for not providing the bowler with a farewell match.

Anderson, who turns 45 next summer, first played List A cricket in 2000. Beyond his 911 international wickets, he has taken 443 first-class wickets for Lancashire, alongside 83 in List A and 50 in T20s.

Despite the unexpected end to his tenure at Lancashire, Anderson indicated that he is beginning to look ahead with a sense of excitement. "I am starting to get excited about the future, whether it is something different or playing cricket again. It is exciting," he shared. "There are exciting challenges ahead. I have to attack it like that and not dwell too much on how or why it finished at Lancs."

He acknowledged the sadness of the exit from his childhood club but maintained his strong connection. "I am sad the way it ended with the club I supported as a kid but now I have thought about it I am quite excited for the future. I am always going to support Lancashire. I was born there, grew up watching them, had some of my most memorable days out with dad watching them, got to play for them and captain the club, which is something most people dream about. I feel like I have a special connection with the club and will always support them."

It is understood that other counties have expressed interest in signing Anderson, though he speculated he would not play for Lancashire's rivals Yorkshire. He is currently processing the events and considering his next steps.
