James Anderson Retires From Cricket at 44 After Lancashire Contract Not Renewed
The England legend concluded his storied career after being informed by Lancashire that his contract would not be extended for the 2027 season.
Sir James Anderson, England's record Test wicket-taker, has retired from cricket at the age of 44. The decision comes after Lancashire informed the legendary fast bowler that they would not offer him a new contract for the 2027 season.
Anderson was told earlier this week by Lancashire's new chief executive, Richard Kenyon, and new director of cricket, Paul Farbrace, that his time at Old Trafford had concluded. Daily Mail Sport understands that Anderson will not seek to continue his county career, which began in 2001.
During the most recent summer season, Anderson claimed 50 wickets for Lancashire at an average of 17 in Division Two of the County Championship. His career totals include 704 Test wickets for England and 1,193 first-class wickets at an average of 24. He also took 358 wickets in one-day cricket and 71 in T20 matches.
Anderson was knighted by Princess Anne in 2025 for his contributions to cricket.
