James Anderson Not Offered New Contract by Lancashire
England's all-time leading wicket-taker's career at Old Trafford appears to be over.
James Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, has not been offered a new contract by Lancashire, potentially signaling the end of his professional career at Old Trafford.
The 44-year-old, who chose to continue playing with Lancashire after being compelled into international retirement by England in 2024, captained the team in the County Championship last season. However, Lancashire endured a difficult season, finishing second from bottom in Division Two.
Anderson will not have the opportunity to play for Lancashire in 2027, the summer he will turn 45. It remains uncertain whether he will retire or seek to extend his 26-year professional career with another county.
Anderson first played top-level cricket for the Lancashire Cricket Board in 2000 at the age of 17 and made his Lancashire debut the following year. His departure coincides with a period of significant change at Old Trafford, as the county undertakes a review of its cricket operations. Dame Sarah Storey is leading the review as interim chair, and Richard Kenyon has recently been appointed as the new chief executive. Paul Farbrace was appointed as Lancashire's director of cricket earlier this month.
Despite his age, Anderson has maintained strong form. He took 50 wickets in the 2026 County Championship, a tally surpassed by only six other bowlers in Division Two, and was named Lancashire's Championship player of the year. Across his career for Lancashire, Anderson has taken 443 first-class wickets, in addition to 83 List A wickets and 50 T20 wickets.
