Jalen Hurts Placed on Injured Reserve After Blood Clot Diagnosis
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss at least four games following the discovery of a superficial blood clot in his calf.
The Philadelphia Eagles have placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after he was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his calf, the team announced Thursday. The injury will sideline the star quarterback for a minimum of four games.
Hurts had been receiving treatment for the condition for nearly a week and even traveled to London for the Eagles' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played in that game and practiced fully on Wednesday, the day before the team's announcement.
The Eagles' statement detailed that Hurts initially sought treatment on October 8th after being cleated during a game on October 4th. He practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday of that week and was added to the practice report on Friday.
An ultrasound performed on Saturday, following the team's flight to London, revealed the superficial blood clot. Medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and determined that Hurts could safely play, recommending a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and return flight.
Hurts played without limitation on Sunday. After receiving treatment on Monday and Tuesday and practicing fully on Wednesday, a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night revealed movement in the clot. The team stated that Hurts would miss Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers as they determine the appropriate course of treatment, prioritizing his health and safety.
Hurts is now expected to miss games against the Panthers and three NFC East rivals. He will be eligible to return in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the Eagles having a bye in Week 10.
Superficial blood clots can pose risks if they block blood flow to vital organs, potentially leading to serious conditions such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack if not promptly treated. In some cases, they can cause tissue damage or be fatal.
Tanner McKee, the Eagles' third-year backup quarterback, is expected to start in Hurts' absence. McKee has started two career games, with the team holding a 1-1 record in those contests.
The Eagles are also currently managing absences for key players DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley.
