The Detroit Lions have signed running back Jahmyr Gibbs to a three-year contract extension worth $67.5 million, a deal that positions him as the highest-paid running back in NFL history. The agreement will keep Gibbs with the Lions through the 2030 season.

The extension could reach up to $75.75 million with incentives and includes $51 million in guaranteed money. Gibbs' new annual salary of $22.5 million surpasses the recent deal signed by Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, which was worth $66.75 million over three years.

Gibbs, 23, was already under contract through 2027. Lions head coach Dan Campbell had previously expressed his eagerness for Gibbs to be on the field, stating earlier in the week, "Every day that goes by, that’s another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part."

Since being selected 12th overall by the Lions in 2023, Gibbs has emerged as one of the league's premier running backs. Last season, he accumulated 1,223 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, complemented by 616 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. His 49 career touchdowns over his first three NFL seasons represent a franchise record, exceeding that of former Lions great Barry Sanders, who had 47 in the same span.

Gibbs' role is expected to expand following the offseason trade of David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.
