Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was absent from the team's opening training camp practice on Wednesday, a move that comes as the Pro Bowl player is eligible for a contract extension.

Lions coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the situation, stating, "You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys. This will kind of continue. It’ll come as it comes. I think that’s the best way to say it. This is both sides working through something, and we’ll take it as it comes, but that’s where it is."

Gibbs has reported to camp and is not on the team's Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football Injury lists, indicating his absence from practice is related to contract negotiations. He is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract after being selected by the Lions with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

In his rookie season, Gibbs rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also catching 52 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown in 15 games. His production increased in the subsequent season, where he recorded 1,412 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, alongside 52 receptions for 517 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, Gibbs started all 17 games, amassing 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, with 77 catches for 616 yards and five touchdowns. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons.

Gibbs' situation mirrors that of Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, who also missed the first day of his team's training camp due to contract-related reasons.
