Jacks Stars as England Overcome Sri Lanka in ODI Victory

England secured an 89-run victory over Sri Lanka at the Riverside, a win that saw them displace their opponents in sixth place in the ODI standings. The performance, while not always aesthetically pleasing, showcased characteristics that captain Harry Brook believes will be beneficial with the 50-over World Cup just a year away.

Will Jacks was instrumental in the victory, taking a career-best five wickets for 22 runs with his off-spin, after an unbeaten 46 with the bat. "It was a very good win in my eyes," Brook said. "The pitch wasn't as good as you'd expect in England but we have managed to manufacture a win when conditions weren't in our favour."

England posted a total of 265 after being asked to bat first. Brook top-scored with 67, but Joe Root fell six runs short of a half-century, ending a significant partnership. The middle order struggled, with England slipping to 211 for seven at one point. However, a late surge from Jacks helped push the total closer to 300.

In response, Sri Lanka's batting order faltered under disciplined English bowling. The pressure mounted as England's bowlers, particularly Jacks, took crucial wickets. Jacks' final bowling spell saw him claim three wickets in four deliveries, sealing the series lead. Dunith Wellalage offered some resistance with 45 runs off 36 balls, but it was not enough to avert the defeat.

The victory came shortly after England's brief occupancy of the No. 1 T20 ranking ended following India's close win over Japan. The team's ability to defend a sub-300 score, a feat not achieved in regular ODIs since July 2022, was highlighted as a positive development by Brook.
